Donna August is an accomplished marketing leader who has worked in B2B marketing her entire career. She is a firm believer that in order to succeed, a brand must create a differentiated value for itself using a data-driven approach. She is also a strong advocate for coaching and developing marketing talent — for both the long-term success of her organization and for the individuals who work with her. She prides herself on being able to build teams that take core marketing skills and translate them into action that makes a real difference for a brand, as well as working across teams internally to build a stronger organization.
I think getting people on the same page — whether it’s a leadership team or a project team — is inherently challenging. But it’s absolutely critical to getting anything done. Anyone who’s worked for me or with me knows that I insist on defining and agreeing on objectives at the beginning of any effort. If we can agree upfront on what we’re trying to achieve and what it means to be successful once we get to the end, then it’s much easier for everyone to stay on the same path along the way.

How would you say Cofactor “practices what it preaches” when it comes to delivering more intelligent ad content?
From a marketing standpoint, my team is trying to achieve the same things as our customers. Our job as marketers is to figure out how to use all available Cofactor assets and content to influence our customers to act. The challenge is in figuring out and delivering the right messages that drive that action and lead to revenue opportunities for our company. It’s really no different than what our clients are trying to do to influence their consumers through advertising.

Brief. Make a Bigger Impact by Saying Less by Joseph McCormack is a must read. The ability to communicate well is at the core of all professional and personal success, and with no end to the number of emails, meetings, news sources, social feeds and more to consume on a daily basis, the idea of clarity through brevity really resonates. Whether you’re trying to influence a team of colleagues, an audience of thousands, or even your significant other, sometimes the less you say, the more likely you are to be heard.
